Women & Heart Disease

Once again February is here – a month when we bring focus to women and heart disease. However, I like to bring attention to this disease every day of the year. Many women perceive heart disease as a “man’s disease.” In reality, heart disease is the number one killer in women. It’s important that every woman become aware of heart disease and the know the facts, as well as what to look in themselves.

The facts: (American Heart Association)

  • Heart disease results in 420,000 lives per year
  • Nearly twice as many women than men die of heart disease and 2/3 of women who died suddenly, had no previous symptoms
  • More women die of heart disease than all forms of cancer

Be aware of your risk factors for heart disease:

  • Family history
  • Diabetes mellitus
  • Hypertension
  • Obesity
  • Tobacco Use
  • High cholesterol

Signs and symptoms:

Women may have different symptoms than men. Men can typically experience chest pressure, heavy and crushing sensation in the chest with radiation down the arm. However, women may have symptoms that are subtle which can easily be dismissed. Women can have subtle chest tightness, fatigue, nausea, vomiting and shortness of breath. Some women may not be able to describe symptoms, but just have a feeling of just not feeling well.

Heart disease is preventable and treatable. Don’t delay when symptoms develop. See your doctor if you experience any of the above symptoms.
