Maternal-Fetal Medicine Services

At Crystal Run, we provided a full range of maternal-fetal medicine services.

  • Pregnancy or pre-conception counseling: pregnancy planning for women with medical complications, such as diabetes, chronic hypertension, renal disease, or previous history of poor reproductive/pregnancy outcomes.

  • Consultation on management of pregnancies complicated by obstetrical or surgical conditions.

Genetic counseling:

  • Evaluation for women of advanced maternal age (mothers over 35).

  • Evaluation of potential parents who already have children or family members with a genetic problem or birth defect.

  • Evaluation of high-risk pregnancies that have been detected through prenatal blood tests and/or ultrasound.

Genetic testing:

  • First trimester screening: Our certified ultrasound technologists perform first trimester screenings to provide an early and accurate diagnosis of certain chromosomal disorders.

  • Chorionic villus sampling (CVS): Chorionic villus sampling (CVS) is an ultrasound-guided procedure generally done during the first three months (usually between 11-13 weeks) of pregnancy to test for chromosomal abnormalities. During CVS, samples of the tiny fingerlike growths found in the placenta are taken for biopsy. CVS is used to detect such family diseases as Tay-Sachs disease, sickle cell disease, cystic fibrosis and hemophilia. It also can be used to find chromosomal disorders such as Down syndrome.

  • Amniocentesis: a test that is similar to CVS because it is used to identify chromosomal abnormalities, inherited conditions and some birth defects. Amniocentesis is typically done later in pregnancy—after the fifteenth week.

Obstetrical ultrasound:

  • First trimester screening for birth defects through early ultrasound.

  • Second trimester detailed sonography to screen for birth defects.

  • Third trimester screening of fetal size, fluid volume and placental flow.

Antenatal testing:

  • Non-stress testing to monitor your baby's heart rate.

  • Biophysical profile to determine fetal well-being.

  • Amniotic fluid assessment to measure the amount of fluid that surrounds your baby.
