CRYSTALRUN HEALTHCARE AND ITS EMPLOYEES FIGHT BACK AGAINST CANCER FOR SULLIVAN COUNTY’S ‘RELAY FOR LIFE’
Middletown, NY –June 16, 2010- Crystal Run Healthcare, the area’s largest multi-specialty group medical practice with 11 locations throughout Sullivan and Orange Counties, once again came out in full force for Sullivan County’s annual “Relay for Life.” On Saturday, June 5, Crystal Run Healthcare’s relay team, along with fellow participants and community members sprawled the grounds at Sullivan County Community College in Loch Sheldrake with one common goal – to join Sullivan County’s fight to beat cancer.
Since its inception in 2004, Crystal Run Healthcare has been the presenting Marathon Sponsor of the Sullivan event, donating $5,000 each year to the American Cancer Society, benefactor of “Relay for Life”. Crystal Run employees work hard throughout the year raising funds to increase the total donation and support the overnight walk. The teams’ most popular raffle, the “Stay-Cation prize package” included a 37” Sanyo Flat screen Super HDTV, a Wii Game system complete with games and a DVD Player. By holding various raffles, book sales, dress-down days, and a bowl-a-thon, employees raised an additional $6,122.50, more than doubling the corporate donation.
Team Captain, Clarese Conklin, Provider Resources Associate at the practice’s Rock Hill location, and long-time area resident headed the Crystal Run Relay for Life team. “Clarese works tirelessly towards this effort every year and her actions truly epitomize the core values of Crystal Run Healthcare,” said Chief Human Resources Officer, Mary DeFreitas.
“My son Jonathan and I do this relay every year since my mother died from lung cancer. It is a disease that affects not only the patients, but also their families. So many people don't know that there is help and resources out there to help BOTH the patient and the caregivers. It also raises awareness of the importance of early diagnosis and treatment. We want to celebrate more birthdays, which is why we relay,” said Ms. Conklin.
Fellow team members and CRHC staff, Doreen Cooper, Co-Captain, Mary Dymond, NP, Co-Coordinator for the Sullivan Relay, Debbie Durland, Marge Weidkam, the Provider Resources Department, Christine Doyle and Stephanie Niforos were all instrumental in organizing the teams fundraising efforts, securing donated items, and crafting saleable items to benefit Relay for Life.
Crystal Run Healthcare Managing Partner & CEO, Hal Teitelbaum, MD, MBA, said, “Relay for Life brings communities together and supports the tremendous strides that the American Cancer Society has made to find a cure. It is a great feeling that our involvement in this event inspired our employees to participate at this level. I am awestruck by the commitment of our staff to make a difference and their hard work to multiply our total donation. They have proven themselves as philanthropic leaders in our community.”
Relay For Life is a fun-filled overnight event designed to celebrate survivorship and raise money for research and programs of the American Cancer Society. Relay has grown from a single man’s passion to fight cancer in 1985, into the world’s largest movement to end the disease. Each year, more than 3.5 million people in 5,000 communities in the United States gather to take part in this global phenomenon and raise much-needed funds and awareness to save lives from cancer.
