 Flu Vaccine Availability Update

Flu vaccine availability update: Monday December 7, 2009. Crystal Run Healthcare is continually searching for any available influenza vaccine. Listed below is the current vaccine availability at Crystal Run Healthcare.

Seasonal influenza shot vaccine: Available in office as well as in flu clinic, please call for an appointment.

Seasonal influenza nasal-spray vaccine (limited to only certain people, ages 2 through 49): Available in office as well as in flu clinic, please call for an appointment. We currently have a supply of FluMist seasonal influenza vaccine. FluMist is approved for certain people ages 2 through 49. FluMist is not right for everyone. FluMist must not be given to: people with history of hypersensitivity to eggs, egg proteins, gentamicin, gelatin, or arginine; people with life-threatening reactions to previous influenza vaccinations; and children and adolescents receiving aspirin or aspirin-containing therapy. Please call 703-6999 if you think FluMis tis appropriate for you.

H1N1 "swine flu" nasal spray vaccine (limited to only certain people, ages 2 through 49): Available in certain offices as well as in flu clinic, please call for an appointment. H1N1 "swine flu" shot vaccine: Available in certain offices as well as in flu clinic, please call for an appointment. We received a small supply of H1N1 injectable vaccine. We will be working through a list of high-risk patients but will likely have additional vaccine. We will be distributing the vaccine to our sites so physicians can give the vaccines to patients when they are being seen.

Flu shot clinics: We will be scheduling seasonal vaccine clinics soon. At the present time we will not have H1N1 vaccination clinics, but that might change based on vaccine availability.

Please check our website regularly for updated information.

Crystal Run Healthcare “FluView”
2009- The year in review
Updated: January 27, 2010

Below is a compilation of data from Crystal Run Healthcare on patients seen and diagnosed with influenza or influenza-like illness. This is intended for informational purposes only and should not be used to make healthcare or policy decisions. Crystal Run cannot warrant the accuracy or completeness of this information. We urge you to contact your physician if you have any medical questions.

The year saw a massive increase in influenza numbers compared to the prior year. Nearly all of the increase was attributable to H1N1. Here is a summary of statistics for 2009.

Influenza by zip code

Patients who are diagnosed with influenza in the last year are shown below by their residential zip code. Darker circles indicate higher numbers of patients residing in that zip code that were seen at Crystal Run Healthcare and diagnosed with influenza.

Influenza over time

Confirmed influenza A and clinically diagnosed influenza were overall markedly elevated compared to 2008.

In a different way of looking at influenza diagnosed at Crystal Run, there was a long period from June to December of 2008 where there was little if any influenza activity. However, beginning in December of 2008 sporadic then steady influenza activity developed. There has been little if any Flu B diagnosed this past season.

If you break this down by geographic location, Middletown seemed to see influenza slightly before other sites. This might reflect the volume of people coming in to be seen rather than true earlier disease emergence.

Age distribution of influenza at Crystal Run Healthcare

The young were affected much more than older individuals. People older than 40 were not spared from influenza. The total number of people affected- even those older than 40, was elevated compared to 2008.

Sex distribution of influenza at Crystal Run Healthcare

Patients diagnosed with either clinical influenza or confirmed influenza A over the last two years were predominantly women. In general, more women than men typically seek healthcare.
