CRYSTAL RUN HEALTHCARE'S VASCULAR SURGEONS PERFORM 'FIRST' IN ORANGE COUNTY
Middletown, NY —April 12, 2010- On April 1, Crystal Run Healthcare’s vascular surgeons, John Fiorianti, MD and Paul Kochupura, MD, performed a unique operation regarded as Orange County’s ‘first’ combined endovascular and open procedure for carotid artery disease at Orange Regional Medical Center’s Horton Campus in Middletown.
“The patient, a 62 year old male presented with a history of asymptomatic carotid artery stenosis. We had performed an angiogram two weeks prior, which demonstrated two critical stenoses, one in the common carotid artery and the other in the internal carotid artery. We were posed with the issue of protecting him from a life-threatening stroke, so we came up with a novel approach. Dr. Kochupura and I decided to perform a carotid artery stent for the common carotid artery stenosis via a femoral approach in addition to a standard carotid artery endartectomy for the internal carotid artery stenosis. The patient did remarkably well and was discharged home the next day,” said Dr. Fiorianti.
