What made you want to become a health care provider or what is your earliest memory of wanting to be one?
As a child, my grandmother was very close to me. When she got ill, I didn't know what to do for her. I remember asking her if I could look inside her and fix her problem. My desire to fix the insides of people developed over the years.
What do you love most about your specialty? / Why did you choose your specialty?
The people. I enjoy people's life experiences and seeing their personal journey unfold. Through their stories and life, there's a deeper understanding to their individual's experience of their disease.
How do you connect with your patients?
Active listening. I've come to learn that hearing the whole person before I get involved is key to being a positive influence.
What are your interests outside of the office (hobbies, activities)?
I'm a runner. I completed my first marathon this past November in NYC. I enjoy reading. My husband and I are also involved in the Young Adult Ministry and Newlyweds Ministry of our church. We also volunteer our time to help the destitute around the world. Our last trip was to Haiti this past June.
What is your advice for your patients?
In my own life I am motivated by hope. When people are sick and dealing with chronic diseases, it's difficult to see hope. I am a firm believer that a cheerful heart brings health.
