Specialties

Welcome to Internal Medicine at Crystal Run. Our internists (who treat adults age 18 and up) specialize in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of adult diseases including cancer, infections, and diseases affecting the heart, blood, kidneys, joints, and digestive, respiratory and vascular systems.

While our internists’ primary responsibility includes health maintenance and disease screening, they are also trained in the essentials of primary care and serve as consultants to physicians in a variety of disciplines, from surgery to family medicine.

About Internal Medicine Doctors and Their Training

If you’re deciding between an internist and a family practitioner, keep in mind that both are primary care providers, but internists primarily treat adults, while family practitioners treat family members of all ages, from infancy to adulthood.

Internal medicine doctors have an extensive tradition of leveraging the best medical science available in the course of caring for their patients. Sometimes called the “doctor’s doctor,” internists routinely consult their colleagues in the diagnosis of complex (and sometimes puzzling) conditions, including illnesses affecting multiple bodily systems.

After medical school (four years), internists undergo three years of residency training, working in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Some choose to practice general medicine, serving as primary care physicians to patients throughout their adult lives, while others choose to become “hospitalists,” spending much of their time treating hospitalized patients.

Others choose to go into a specific medical subspecialty, such as allergy & immunology, cardiology, gastroenterology, rheumatology, or oncology, often leading to board certification in two specialties (e.g. internal medicine and geriatric medicine).

Know your meds! Every appointment, every time.

It’s important to have and carry a list of your medications with you. When you have your list of medications on-hand, you can quickly answer questions about your medication during check-ups, appointments, or pharmacy visits. This is also helpful in the case of an emergency when you are being cared for by an unfamiliar provider or emergency services personnel who need to know what medication you are currently on and any medication allergies you may have. Saving your medication list as a picture on your smartphone is an efficient method of saving this information; a hand-printed list in your wallet is also helpful! Learn more.
