What made you want to become a health care provider or what is your earliest memory of wanting to be one?
I started caring for my hemi-palegic mother at the age of 10 when she suddenly became paralyzed from a cerebral hemorhage. I realized then how satisfying it was to be a caregiver and just knew I wanted to be a nurse or physician.
What do you love most about your specialty? / Why did you choose your specialty?
I love the continuity of care. Really getting to know not only the patient but families as well. Being able to care for patients even if they can't be cured.
How do you connect with your patients?
Really being present and listening to concerns and taking them seriously. Providing calm reassurance and a warm smile. Taking an interest in what's important to them.
What are your interests outside of the office (hobbies, activities)?
Horseback riding & quilting. Also, saltwater fishing.
What is your advice for your patients?
This is what I always tell my patients who are being treated with curative intent: " This is just a snapshot in time, I am here for you and we will get through this together" "Don't give away your power and let cancer take over your life". For patients with advanced/metastatic disease: "Be realistic but never stop being hopeful"
