Cardiology Division Takes Steps to Advance Implantable Pacemaker Technology
Middletown, N.Y. – July 11, 2017 – Crystal Run Healthcare is pleased to announce that its Cardiology division successfully inserted the world’s smallest pacemaker, Micra TPS, into a patient, for treatment of bradycardia, a condition defined by slow or irregular heart rhythm. Pacemakers are the most widely used methods to treat this condition in order to reinstate the heart’s normal rhythm and relieve symptoms by delivering electrical impulses to the heart to increase the heart rate.
The Micra TPS pacemaker is less invasive than conventional pacemakers and is implanted directly into a patient’s heart via a catheter based delivery system from large veins, eliminating leads in the blood vessels. The pacemaker, 90% smaller than other pacemakers, is about the size of a large vitamin capsule and is entirely self-contained within a patient’s heart, therefore reducing possible medical complications originating from a chest incision and from wires that are used to run a conventional pacemaker into the heart.
"Leadless pacing technology provides an option for some patients that require single chamber pacing without leaving permanent wires inside the major veins and cardiac chambers. This new technology will likely benefit most of those patients at higher procedural risk with traditional pacemaker systems. The Micra TPS was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in April 2016 and has been granted Medicare reimbursement eligibility.
