Meet Meg Brunelle CCS, CRCR | Director HCC Revenue Cycle, Coding and Education

Why do you love working at Crystal Run Healthcare?

I love working at Crystal Run because of the support I feel from my coworkers, leaders, and employees in my work outflow, communications, and decision-making. This organization always finds a way to work together seamlessly as a team, with everyone’s input being considered and valued. We have made a collective effort to build a sense of safety and community here at Crystal Run, in which myself, and others can produce our best work and feel satisfied and supported, knowing that we are making a difference in the organization.

What career path did you take to get to where you are today?

I’ve had a terrific opportunity to bring my career into a really cool loop. Starting out in Revenue Cycle, transitioning to Coding and Documentation Integrity, and now leading HCC Revenue Cycle Coding and Education at Crystal Run, my two paths have merged into one. I took a summer job in a hospital Business Office when I was 15 years old. I loved it, so stayed working there through college. I learned every gear that made the hospital’s Revenue Cycle engine go. I worked on claims creation, charge entry, insurance follow-up, collections, and inbound patient call customer service. When I became a coder I followed the same steps to success. I coded for every modality and provider type for all service lines. Achieving certifications with HFMA and AHIMA gave me dual credentials for work in these fields I enjoy. Joining Crystal Run with all this experience, connecting the dots across my Rev Cycle, Coding, and CDI map.

What advice do you have for someone just starting out in your field?

My advice for starting out in HCC Revenue Cycle and Education is to listen! People all around you will offer unique, inspiring, thought-provoking, and powerful stories and advice if you take the time to listen. A huge part of my learning throughout my career has not only been the hands-on experience in the work but learning from the people around me. Luckily here at Crystal Run, there are countless people who want to see you succeed and are always ready to work together. The best mentors of my career have been my incredible leaders and dedicated co-workers at Crystal Run. Never be afraid to ask for help, and always be ready to listen, ask questions, and learn from the best resource out there, other people!

How do you help shape the patient experience at CRHC?

There’s no more important feature of healthcare than the patient. My work goal sets are completely driven by effective and efficient care of our patient population. Using data from each day, week, month, and year, to analyze the severity of illness and create provider best practices is the foundation of the HCC Revenue Cycle. My role here at Crystal Run allows me the awesome opportunity to interface with our providers to make a difference through data collection and disease management.  This collaboration with our providers is incredibly impactful and rewarding.
