Welcome to Maternal Fetal Medicine at Crystal Run. At Crystal Run, our fellowship-trained Maternal Fetal Medicine specialists (also known as a high-risk OB/GYN) provide consultations, co-management, and direct care for high-risk pregnancies both before (pre-conception counseling) and during pregnancy. Our high-risk pregnancy doctors are trained to treat various obstetrical, medical, and surgical complications of pregnancy. Crystal Run’s Maternal Fetal Medicine Services provide care for both mother and baby, utilizing the most advanced diagnostic and therapeutic techniques available for optimal management of complicated, high-risk pregnancies.
Who should see a Maternal-Fetal Medicine specialist?
Patients undergoing diagnostic or therapeutic procedures during pregnancy, such as:
- Comprehensive ultrasound (imaging to check for size, position, and anatomy)
- Chorionic villus sampling (a prenatal test for chromosomal or genetic disorders, using a sample of placental tissue)
- Genetic amniocentesis (a procedure in which amniotic fluid is removed for testing or treatment)
Women with medical or surgical disorders, such as:
- Heart disease
- High blood pressure
- Preeclampsia (toxemia) (a serious pregnancy complication, with high blood pressure and other health effects)
- Diabetes or other endocrine (glandular) disorders
- Kidney or gastrointestinal disease
- Infectious diseases
- Autoimmune disorders
Healthy women whose pregnancy is at markedly increased risk for problems, such as:
- Abnormal screening (quad screen, first trimester screen, or AFP (alpha-fetoprotein blood test))
- Twins, triplets, or more
- Recurrent pre-term (premature) labor and delivery
- Premature rupture of membranes (“water breaking”)
- Recurrent pregnancy loss
- Suspected fetal growth restriction (baby not growing enough)
- Advanced maternal age (35 or older)
