The Importance of Mammograms: Introducing new 3D technology

The best resource people have in detecting breast cancer early is through mammograms.  A mammogram is an X-ray of the breast tissue. The picture from the x-ray can show changes around the breast that may not be found in a physical examination. The clearer an x-ray image is, the better a radiologist can identify signs of breast cancer.

The American Cancer Society recommends that women of average risk start yearly mammograms at age 40. For those with a family history or other risk factors, screenings may need to begin earlier. Patients should discuss their personal and family history to see if earlier mammography screening is right for them.

The Optum Radiology at Crystal Run Healthcare breast imaging centers recently upgraded to 3D mammography, also known as digital breast tomosynthesis. This advanced imaging technique provides a more detailed view of the breast tissue by taking multiple X-rays from different angles, which are then combined into a three-dimensional image. This makes it easier for radiologists to identify potential abnormalities, even being able to identify breast cancer before a lump is formed.

During a mammogram, radiologists examine the breast tissue for any signs of abnormalities, such as tumors, calcifications or distortions in the breast. If a patient has had mammogram imaging before, radiologists will compare current images with previous mammograms to identify any changes over time. Additionally, it helps radiologists track a patient’s breast density as they age. For mammograms, breast density is categorized as A, B, C, or D. Knowing the breast density of the patient can help radiologists and providers know when additional imaging, like an ultrasound, is needed to get as accurate of an image of the breast tissue as possible.
