The Importance of Mammograms: A Radiology Leader’s Perspective
The best resource people have in detecting breast cancer early is through mammograms. A mammogram is an X-ray of the breast tissue. The picture from the x-ray can show changes around the breast that may not be found in a physical examination. The clearer an x-ray image is, the better a radiologist can identify signs of breast cancer. Malissa Noto, VP of Radiology at Optum Medical Care, explains the importance of updated technology to help detect breast cancer as early as possible.
“Radiology is often invisible to the public until it becomes deeply personal,” said Malissa. “Whether it's a mammogram, MRI, ultrasound or follow-up scan, we want to ensure every patient gets the best-possible standard of care without any delay.”
The American Cancer Society recommends that women of average risk start yearly mammograms at age 40. For those with a family history or other risk factors, screenings may need to begin earlier. Patients should discuss their personal and family history to see if earlier mammography screening is right for them.
The Optum Radiology at Crystal Run Healthcare breast imaging centers recently upgraded to 3D mammography, also known as digital breast tomosynthesis. This advanced imaging technique provides a more detailed view of the breast tissue by taking multiple X-rays from different angles, which are then combined into a three-dimensional image. This makes it easier for radiologists to identify potential abnormalities, even being able to identify breast cancer before a lump is formed.
During a mammogram, radiologists examine the breast tissue for any signs of abnormalities, such as tumors, calcifications or distortions in the breast. If a patient has had mammogram imaging before, radiologists will compare current images with previous mammograms to identify any changes over time. Additionally, it helps radiologists track a patient’s breast density as they age. For mammograms, breast density is categorized as A, B, C, or D. Knowing the breast density of the patient can help radiologists and providers know when additional imaging, like an ultrasound, is needed to get as accurate of an image of the breast tissue as possible.
An interconnected healthcare team is crucial in providing a comprehensive medical experience for patients undergoing mammograms. Patient portal tools like MyChart enable patients to access their medical records, communicate with their healthcare providers and receive timely updates on their test results. This connectivity enhances patient engagement and ensures that all members of the care team are informed and aligned in their care approach.
“Over the last two years, Optum has made significant investments to strengthen and modernize radiology across all modalities throughout the Hudson Valley,” said Malissa. “New 3D mammography imaging centers, new ultrasound imaging machines and a fully connected imaging ecosystem across 31 regional sites supported by over 500 dedicated team members provides a higher quality of care for anyone in need of breast imaging.”
Mammograms are an important tool in detecting and diagnosing breast cancer. Through advanced 3D imaging, careful examination by radiologists and an interconnected care team, patients can benefit from early detection and a more coordinated care experience. Regular screenings, starting at the appropriate age based on individual risk factors, are essential for maintaining breast health.
“We may not always be the final step in a patient's journey, but we are often the turning point,” said Malissa. “By bringing advanced imaging into more communities and integrating it into one seamless system, we are removing barriers, reducing wait times, and putting the patient at the center of everything we do.”
